Plant Maintenance: Time for a Trim & Shot of Fertilizer

FertilizerAugust is great time to do a little maintenance on your pots and baskets. A little trim of an inch or two all-around or off the top of the plants. A shot of fertilizer gives the plants a boost. We recommend Neptune’s Harvest Fish & Seaweed Fertilizer. It’s organic, easy-to-use, and not as strong-smelling as other fish fertilizer. You should see noticeable results within a couple of weeks!

Fertilizing Potted Plants

Did you know that every time you water a potted plant, nutrients leach out of the drain holes along with the excess water? An easy way to deal with fertilization is to use time-release organic fertilizers. Soil microbes activate organic fertilizers, which slowly release their nutrients to plants. Read more about how to grow potted plants.

Feed Your Plants

With regular feedings, plants will thrive! Using an organic fertilizer like we suggested above will allow you to fertilize frequently with “burning” your plants. We suggest feeding the plants in your garden at least every two to three weeks. Container plants should also be fertilized once every two to three weeks and houseplants once a month. Do not fertilize houseplants from Sept. thru March. It’s better to hold off during the short, dark days of winter and then start again in mid-March when the days are getting longer.

Benefits of Fish Fertilizer

• Rebuilds & replenishes soil
• Provides excellent plant growth with increased yields
• Allows nutrients to remain in the soil longer
• Creates less compact soil that easily drains yet holds moisture
